did you try downloading other files ?
when the download stalls, can you still view webpages on other hosts ?
did you try other web-clients than netscape ...

are there any hints in the syslogs ?

After upgrading from the standard redhat 7.0 kernel to kernel 2.2.19 I
find I cannot access rawdevices such as hard drives. When I run the raw

-qa command I get the following error message Cannot open master raw
device '/dev/rawctl' (No such device)

I need to be able to access raw SCSI devices because I'm running
sanergy, can anyone help me fix this problem?

Thanks,

There are some mistakes hear:
Gnome is not your Window Manager. Gnome is only a set of applications
and library's that run on your system (The panel and other things).
You should know what is your Windows Manager (It's probally Sawfish,
but there are others), verify how many desktops you have and, in the
Window Manager configuration (Sawfish inside Gnome Control-Panel),
configure the shortcuts. Try delegating other keys to some shortcuts.
In Sawfish, you can use "dead keys", or "win keys".
Good Luck.

It's the same as the other lines in the fstab file just place vfat
instead of ext2 of iso9660, like....

<file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat defaults 1 2

just make sure that you use <tab> instead of <space> . Below is what
my fstab file looks like.

kyi:/home/kyi# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options>
  <dump> <pass>

/dev/sdb5 none swap sw 0

/dev/sda5 /home ext2 rw 0 2

I hope that this helps.

I have installed Slackware-7.1 several times and never did it get Lilo
right. During the installation you are offered the opportunity to make a
boot flopppy and you should do so, not only with Slack but with any other
distribution. You will have to manually edit /etc/lilo.conf then execute
/sbin/lilo.

Slackware install configures only the framebuffer. You have to configure
your Xserver yourself with xf86config or XF86Setup.

You do not need amixer. aumix is included with MDK-8.0. After modprobing
your sound modules execute

# aumix -v100 -w100 to get full volume on pcm. Read the manpage to
configure the other settings.

For the first time, I recompiled my Mandrake kernel - never saw so
much text whiz by at once! lol But, I did something wrong, and it
doesn't really work - I can't get Xwindows to work, so I was stuck
with a console. And when I wasn't typed it kept spitting the same
message at me:
according to /var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (1312), but
seems to have been murdered mysteriously.
It was that same message over and over, but with different numbers
(1339, 1350, 1361, etc). Then when I logged in as root, it told me
that I had mail. :P That's impossible! The modem doesn't work with
Linux, and I'm not on a network. lol I used to make xconfig to
compile, and cut out all the networking stuff (I'm not a on a network
anyways), most of the soundcards. What could have caused this? It also
told me a I had modules missing (one was 180 I think). Like I said
alot of text whizzing by.....

I read an article yesterday whic said it might have been deliberate that
redhat and drake were latelty shipped with this unstable compiler.. the
reason being it will speed up the development of the compiler as we all
act as a testbed and will report all the problems. JUst widens the

I saw this question in a corel newsgroup w/o an answer so I decided to
ask the same over here:

I installed Corel's photopaint 9 (b/c I'm used to corel & think it is
easier than the Gimp) for linux on my Redhat 7.0 / 2.4.2 kernel.
However, the windowing runs extremely slowly (meaning dialog boxes,
menus, etc.) Is this a standard problem with the WINE or is it possibly
something in photopaint? My system is a Pentium III 800Mhz running
XFree86 4.0.3 on a Matrox G400 dualhead, 32MB.

THanks,

Are you SURE that you have a B-suffix, and not the A-suffix? I'm just
making sure... The A-suffix is similar, but it DOES work with kernel 2.4.2.
The B, however does not, as far as I know, and from what I have read on the

Well, maybe there used to be such in the Solaris "su" man page, but
there isn't now. (At least as of Solaris 7 11/99.) I just checked a
FreeBSD 3.2 system, and it doesn't have one either, so I'm not sure what
you're remembering. I do recall seeing that rant, though. It always seemed
pretty pointless to me, as you could always make a "wheel" group and make
/bin/su only runnable by group wheel if you wanted. Then again, enforcing
that on everybody regardless of local policy also seems kind of silly, so
maybe RMS had a point.

GPG / PGP is a private/public key system. If you are encrypting files for
your own personal use (or rather, to keep others from using your files),
that's not what you want. If you basically want to share files with other
people and ensure nobody else gets to see them, then GPG is perfect for you.

Encrypting a complete file system is supported by various means; read the
loopback encrypted filesystem howto for the simplest solution. The hardest,
but probably the coolest, is the stegfs file system, which not only
encrypts your data transparently, but also lets you deny that you even HAVE
files on your HD. It's currently only working on kernel 2.2.18, though.
