I should have tried both ways before speaking.

If I do ./xdosemu to have a new X-window created, then all is well.
The ALT key activates the top menu bar and allows me to do it after
a file is opened. I had expected that the default background would
have been solid blue; it has small dots making it gray. This is true
even with the default of 'not ibm' and 'not vga'. So this method works
just fine. I will use it for development.

But if I use a Terminal window and do ./dosemu, then I see problems,
just as I had explained before:
1. the ALT key does not activate the top menu bar.
2. the background and side bars are not correct chars.
3. if I hold the ALT key and hit F, then I can get the File menu to
load a file.
4. while the file is loaded, the ALT key cannot be used to get the File
menu again to Save or Exit.

I need to use the ./dosemu method on a box with RH 6.2 that does not
have X loaded. It is a remote data logger box that needs to run one
DOS program to control a hardware board.

Thanks for the help.

Gary
