"xdosemu" is a link to a startup script called "dosemu", but it makes sense which one to start. xdos is a link to a binary called "dos", which was used in older dosemu versions and still works for me (you probably don't have it, so use xdosemu).

But if you can't get any graphics at all, then better focus on some docs to find out what are you doing incorrectly. In general x-dos must open a separate window called something like "DOS in X Box".
