Subject: Best way to setup Proxy/Mail servers on RH 5.2
Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 22:29:14 GMT
I currently have a home network, and want to do the following:
1. Workstations will run Win9x/WinNT
2. Server will be Redhat 5.2 Official initially installed
using the "Server" setup
a. Want a proxy server (http/ftp/etc.) for Win machines
running IE (basic site lockouts would be nice)
b. A mail server with the following capabilities:
1) retrieve/send mail through ppp at various intervals
(ala cron or some config for the mail server)
2) retrieve will be retrieving for several POP3 accounts,
so will need some mapping between the POP3 account name
and the local user name.
3) only one SMTP forward - want it to send mail at the same
time mail is retrieved.
4) listserver capability would be nice, but not required.
c. News server would be nice, but again, not required. If used,
would like to coordinate news retrieval with mail retrieval
The questions:
1. What else needs to be installed from the standard RH 5.2?
2. Are there better suited programs as opposed to the standard RH 5.2?
My background on *nix is rusty, so please be gentle.

Hi. The following instructions are only applicable if the card is non Plug
and Play. Many people erroneously think that a PNP BIOS is sufficient to
straighten things out. Wrong. It only handles the contention phase. Please
post more details. Does this card have jumpers? If not, is it PNP? If so,
you need to run isapnptools. I have done this, and it does not always work
without ispnptools.

Subject: Shadow + NIS + Solaris
Date: 7 Jan 1999 13:54:58 GMT
There was a thread on the subject in October '98 . Let me summarize (you
could find the details on dejanews): Michael Kriss wanted to have the
abovementioned setup working, he did what he should, but NIS login was
still not allowed. Thorsten Kukuk suggested to install the newest glibc
(supposing buggy passwd.adjunct support). Michael Kriss did it but the
problem was still there. There was no further discussion or solution.
However there is a solution of the problem which is incorrect coding in
pam_unix_auth.c which prevents user from logging in. Let me point to the
problem:
pam_unix_auth module runs as root. It issues getpwnam and gets the
CORRECT password from NIS (i.e. from passwd.adjunct.byname map). Then it
issues seteuid and changes uid to logging user id in order to get the
user password in case of NIS+ running. However it's not the case and the
second getpwname gets INCORRECT password as ##user from passwd.byname map
because ordinary user can not see passwd.adjunct.byname map. Obviously
the salt is then incorrect and pam_unix_auth returns with PAM_AUTH_ERR.
This is the reason why Michael Kriss observed "NIS match" and "NIS no such
map" for passwd.adjunct.byname. For the first time he was root, for the
second time he was ordinary user only.
So, if you want to get shadow + NIS + Solaris passwd.adjunct running you
have to modify your pam_unix_auth.c and don't let it issue seteuid call.
As a quick hack you could comment out "NIS+" support from the source code.
Don't forget to compile and install pam_unix_auth.so :-))

I would like to connect my PC with Linux Suse 5.3 and my laptop with
win98. Both have an ethernet card and can be directly connected. I have
understood that I should use SAMBA to do the connection, but I don't
know how !
Is there somewhere any basic help on the package to install, the
configuration to use for a simple network like this ?
How should I configure win98 to see my Linux server ? Should I use a
Novell emulation, start win98 in Novell client or Microsoft Network ?
Where should I tell Linux that my laptop is an user ? Is there any list
of host to configure ?
Thank you for any kind of help

I wish to have several Linux boxes on a network.
A high powered system as the server, and the other systems as a sort of
client. I would like to store all account information on the server. So that
the other linux boxes won't need to be touched, and all updates will be made
to the server.
Can anybody tell if this is possible, and where to find out further info??
I've searched but can't seem to find any info.

I think that what is happening is your surver thinks it is 2 subnets. that
is why the 0.0.1.0 / 0.0.2 allows the ping.... There is some good info on
this int he HOWTO's I just don't remember which..
My lan here at my house is close to that.. I run 2 - 5 port hubs.. one
100/t the other 10/t.
They were only 59 to 79 bucks apiece at Office max.. they are cheper off the
web.
My ips are as 198.162.0.1 (10/t) 198.162.1.1 for 100/t. shared gate
255.255.255.0
I use the IP masqing with tcp/wraping for security. I have all computers
able to ping and transfer files were allowed. The firewall is setup on the
password access.
I hope this helps...

As an alternative solution that is much easier to implement, you can
install a GUI front end on Windows for your children to bring up the
line in the Linux box. It should be easy enough to use. Find one in

Subject: ppp over leased line problem
Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 00:33:05 +0100
I use a Slackware 3.5 linux and a Goramo BPh modem over an asynchronous
leased line (speed-115200).
After running everything I fail to ping the remote end of ppp link.
PPP options are acquired from the ISP, who claims they are succesfully used
on a similar machine.
#ppp init:
>/usr/sbin/pppd-2.5 /dev/modem 38400 my_ip:remote_ip
Interesting that the speed above in order for pppd to work must be set up to
just about any value lower than 115200, but not the 115200 itself, unless
the connection goes down after exactly 30 sec. each time.
#/etc/ppp/options follows:
modem
crtscts
defaultroute
-chap
-pap
persist
passive
debug
netmask 255.255.255.192
mtu 552
mru 552
asyncmap 0
I am wondering why pppd run with 'defaultroute' option doesn't make any
changes to routing table nor to ifconfig.
Actually, i have to enter manually:
>/sbin/ifconfig ppp0 mtu 552 pointopoint remote_ip my_ip netmask
255.255.255.192 up
Now things look a whole lot better:
>ifconfig
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:my_ip P-t-P:remote_ip Mask:255.255.255.192
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:552 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
Still need to set up routing:
>/sbin/route add -host remote_ip ppp0
# shouldn't above be started automagically by pppd?
>/sbin/route add default gw remote_ip ppp0
Command >route issued at this point without any further options hangs up
(blank screen). Pressing ctrl+z makes it return to shell.
Let's try to ping the remote server. Results?
Lights on my modem blink, >pppstat shows properly outgoing packets, but..
nothing comes back :(
The same concerns any other computer on the net.
Why?
Everything works just fine under Windows 95, so apparently ppp server is not
an issue here.
The serial port settings are ok either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, any suggestions welcome.

i hope, this is not one of the usual questions (i have searched dejanews

there seem to be no straight rules - but the "last modified" times and dates

values. look at this:

=======================
"ntbox" is the name (netbeui and dns) of the NT box
(NT4 Server, German), timezone configured to 'europe/berlin'
(GMT+1//daylight-savings). The linux box is configured to timezone
europe/berlin as well. the clocks differ (a bit, usually less than
a minute... the NT server is not under my direct control).
the time and date of the newly created file ([7]) looks nearly plausible,
if everything was like that i would somply look for an inconsistency
in calculating timezone offsets. the other results however ... :-{
do you have the slightest idea
- what goes wrong ?
- how to fix it ?
looking forward to your hints - Heiko Hellweg ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Subject: Trendnet 16 pnp install help?
Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 17:32:00 -0600
my Linux system (Pentium 60) has detected my netcard, and identified it as
a "DEC DC21041 (rev 33)". Some blurry early morning investigation discovered
for me that it was set to IRQ 9 and I/O base 0xfc80. When I set eth0 to
these parameters, it doesn't remember them. When I run netcfg, it sits.. and
if I activate eth0, it spits out the message "delaying i/o initialization"
(or something very similar, like I said, blurry morning hours.)
I have the card set up as an "ne", since I believe it to be NE2000
compatible, and as I don't know which DEC driver, if any, would work.
Could anyone give me a clue as to what is wrong, or more importantly, how to
make it right? :)
