Sounds like a route problem. Check and make sure you have an entry
like this
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use
Iface
0.0.0.0 the.gway.provided 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0
eth0

where the.gway.provided is something that will look like you own IP, but
have a .1, .254, or .255 after it. Usually, you have a route problem
when you can ping yourself, but not out. This could also be a cable
problem, or a hardware problem so you may look into those as well. Good
luck.

I am having trouble getting Linux to print to a remote printer.
The remote printer is also on Linux with Aps Filter and Ghostscript.
Both machines are running Slackware 4.0.

Please start from the basics because I know nothing about Linux
printing.

Thanks, Alex.

My personal opinion is to bite the bullet and run an ethernet wire
between your two boxes. While I have not researched the topic I would
bet that the new "simple" methods to get two Winblows boxen to network
are not yet supported in Linux. They have their own special cards for
each computer and that requires special drivers, etc. If you can find a
kit that plugs into a standard ethernet card then you are probably in
business but if it uses special hardware, you'll have to wait and see if
either the vendor decides to support it or someone gets a burr up their
butt to write one.

I may be hosed on this information so take it with a grain of salt. When
I originally set up my Linux box at home I also set it up as a caching
only name server, you can check out the mini-HOWTO. I recently converted
to a cable modem with dhcpcd that allows dynamic updating of the
resolv.conf file from the host. I experimented with it some this weekend
and came to the conclusion that named MUST be running whether I use the
cable name server entries or use my caching only nameserver.

Have you tried startx -- -bpp 16 (or 24 or 32?). I sounds like it is
running in 8-bit color. If not, post more info about your X-Setup.

BTW, you might actually post this in .setup or .hardware. This is a
networking group and should be left as such.

Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 14:57:15 GMT

Hi All,

I have set up my ppp but facing a problem -

I am able to ping the hosts using their IP but using their name e.g.,
www.yahoo.com I am not able to ping *YES* because I don't have the
proper setup for DNS/NIS - Same thing happens if i try to access
web-sites using NetScape - it says i need to set $SOCK_NIS to point to
the name server.

Please give me some pointers to info on setting up NIS [apart from
HOW-TOs] ?

My ISP doesn't understand what I mean by their DNS server - they are
truw M$ specific - so no point there - Can i point to the DNS maintained
by NIC ? [I hope this makes sense :-)]

I am using RedHat 6.0 / 2.2.15

The trouble is that a "working filter for this problem" where the
problem is that you want to stop "unwanted" dials can only be
done for the general case of "stop *all* dials" because there
is no definition of what "unwanted" means. Diald is doing exactly
what you want it to - but something is generating packets you
didn't want. These packets probably look like packets you
*do* want to bring the link but are just occurring at the wrong
time. If you follow that...

What you *need* is to identify the packets and fix their
source. Identifying the packets is easy. You can either use
a tool like dctrl (which comes with diald) to look at diald's
connection queue to see what connections are active on the
link or you can use "debug 1" in diald's config to log filter
matches. Either way, odds on you will find that the offending
packets are DNS queries that are leaking because of misconfigured
hosts files and/or local DNS servers. (Misconfigured in that
they are not configured to work around Windows brain damage
usually...)

Note that blocking DNS is not really an option since that
means you can only access external sites by explicit IP address
and that having diald filter out just some DNS requests by
peeking inside the packets is a million times harder than
simply getting a local DNS server to do what you want.

Subject: Can't Open Display After KPPP (Fine with Wvdial)

My Linux computer runs SuSE-6.1 distro with knet-1.1.1-14 package and is
setup with KPPP to go online. The only problem I am facing is that
after the connection and the KPPP windows is stowed on the top bar, I am
no longer able to run any X apps, i.e. executing any X apps will give
the following error message:

Xlib: connection to "localhost:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
   Error: Can't open display: localhost:0

After finishing online, i.e. KPPP terminated, I am able to execute any X
apps with no problem. This problem does not happen if I use wvdial
instead of KPPP.

If you know how to fix this problem, I certainly will appreciate a
response. Thanks.

Subject: Re: How to get access to a Wingate server ?
Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 15:37:58 GMT

Wingate is a proxy, and as a result requires some configuration on your
linux machine to support it. If you want to use Netscape, in the
Preferences box, go to Advanced, and then Proxies, and set it up for
your Wingate computer. If you want to use telnet, you need to telnet
first to your wingate machine and then tell it where you want to go. If
you want to run FTP, you need to enter addresses in the form,
"user@site". So, to access ftp.cdrom.com as an anonymous user, you need
to enter "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" in your ftp program. Although
netscape seems to be able to access FTP through the HTTP proxy.

I hope this helps, although it might sound complicated, it really isn't.

You would have to get into some fancy socket programming or set up rpc and
install the proper vb libraries.

Why not just do some simple CGI scripts in PERL and use a browser as the
front end to the Windows users instead of VB. This will give universal
access to the programs and it won't crash! :->

Subject: Help needed on installing IPv6 on Linux
Date: 2 Aug 1999 16:57:08 GMT

Dear all,

I have the following problem:

I have installed IPv6 over the 2.1.90 kernel version of Linux (This
particular version is needed by a Mobile IPv6 package that I want to
implement) both on a laptop and on a desktop PC.
Although I have followed exactly the same procedure (the one described on
the Peter Bieringer's Linux-IPv6 HOWTO) on both machines, the IPv6
implementation on the destop is working perfectly while the laptop when
booting presents the following message:

"No IPv6 routers present".

This, of course, isn't the case since the desktop is connected on the same
IPv6 network and it is able to autoconfigure itself by reading the router
advertisements.

I suspect that there could be a problem with the pcmcia card and drivers of
the laptop. (this is perhaps the only notable difference between the two
machines)
I am using the pcmcia-cs 3.0.8 package in order to have pcmcia support over
Linux for the laptop.

If anynone could give me a hint on this (peculiar in my opinion) problem I
would highly appreciate it.

Thank you
Theodore

Subject: Masquerading and AOL Instant Messenger

Does anyone know if AOL Instant Messenger will work behind a Linux 5.2 box
using masquerading and ipfwadm rules? If it does work, are there any special
items to setup such as ipautofw settings? Someone wants me to come set this
up for them and since I have never tried the AOL IM product I have no first
hand knowledge of whether or not it will work or what I have to do to get it
to work.

Thanks for any assistance.

Subject: NCPFS and Netware 4.11

I am running a NetWare 4.11 network. I have a server in an organizational
unit and one in the root organization. I can mount the server in the root
just fine, when I run ncpmount with all the specified switches for the
server in the OU in the tree, it says it cant find it. Does anybody know
how to configure this for NDS support?

-Mike
