A year is a long time in computing ;)

Here's some links:

http://www.proxim.com
http://www.breezecom.com
http://www.wavelan.com

It's "internal wireless lan" or IEEE-802.11 you're looking for, not the
building-to-buiding type..

>Also, why do you list a hub? You'd only need a hub if you wanted to have more
> than 2 machines on the line ...

Well you can get away without a hub for only two machines, true, I prefer to
have some room for expansion. Also considering usenet is a many-to-many medium,
I thought I'd spec out a typical office network.

> not to mention 60 quid being somewhat steep
>for a small hub (at least by canadian standards ...)

Yes, but those wireless prices were very cheap ( and ex vat), so it balances out ;)

While on the subject, this sort of wireless networking is very slow - you won't get
the advertised 1Mbps - real world is about 50 k/sec - fine for internet/email, not so
good for throwing files around.

I'm having the same sort of trouble here with a static IP, I've just
found this through the LDP man pages :

route add 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0

It appears to be a not well documented thing. I haven't had time to try
it yet, but will asap. It seems similar, or may contain a typo, as the
part of the output of route print under Windows 98.

I got this message on a badly configured network : there were subnets I
was not aware of : particularly I used a false netmask.
The messages disappears as soon as I correct the network configuration.
I strongly suggest to carrefully check the architecture of your network,
and verify the netmask and the gateway address.

Works fine for me as well. Just ensure that you enable as many ipmasq modules
as you can just in case.
Now getting ICQ to work for file transfers to myself, now THATS fun.

If anyone has found a simple way to do this without compiling like mad then
please let me know.
I think you can just forward the port to all the machines that will need it but
I cannot remember what the command is.

Pinging the router does not means your are able to go out your local
net.
You need to configure the netmask too.

What kind of error :
- is it a DNS error that means that your PC is unable to convert a name
to the IP adress
- is it a routing error that means the network is not correctly
configured.

In order to know, try to ping the IP address :
- if there is a response, the problem is a DNS one
- if there is no response, the problem is a routing one (and there can
still be a DNS problem).

What is your setup?
I have NetGear NICs and FE Hub.
Everything works with 95 but with SuSE 6.1 (2.2.2.7) I
get 30% packet loss on PING, to or from the box.
This is with the supplied TULIP and also with the
Netgear driver.
My latest attempt to fix was to use a TULIP 0.90
driver, this raised the packet loss to 50% but
I no longer get the "Transmitter stopped !!" message in dmesg.

I would like to find out if anyone has got a similar config working !!

Hello,

I'm using debian 2.0.34 and proftpd for my ftp site.

When I make a ftp connection, I can send and receive files. When I want to
see the contents of my ftp site a can't see anything. But I'm sure there are
some files. Even when a give them all permissions (777) I can't see them.

What can I do to solve this problem ?

Many thanks in advance

I'll second that reccomendation! I went to the urls listed below, and found
them both to be an excellent resource for configuring my little network. I
have 2 win98 pc's and a RH 5.2 machine, and wanted to be able to share files
on the network with all of them. After only a few minutes of following the
instructions, I was looking at share folders on my windows network that I
had setup using the guide on these pages!

Thanks for the links, they're bookmarked!

Your machine is trying to do a reverse DNS lookup on the calling
computer and waiting for this to time out. You can fix your DNS, or
put an entry for the calling computer in /etc/hosts on the target
computer.

Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 15:10:59 +0200

Here's the story... I'm getting cablemodem soon. Our cablemodem company
uses standard 3Com 509b cards to connect. Now I want to set up a firewall
so I can connect multiple PC's to the internet over the cable modem since I
only have one valid IP. I also have a 3Com 905 networkcard in the Linux
box. Now should I install only firewall, or proxy server, IP Masqueing? I
read the Firewall and IP Masquering HOWTO's but still I can't seem to find
out which is more appropriate? I only want to be able to mail/ftp/surf and
ICQ through the Firewall (and perhaps some online gaming lateron...) but
the firewall will also be a www and ftp server that should be available for
everybody.

Any suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance!

This error message is from using the old pcmcia token ring driver, you
need to new driver for 2.2.x

But it is likely to be the problem. It is probably trying to resolve the
IP address of the incoming machine. Pending getting to grips with DNS,
try putting the remote machine in /etc/hosts.

PS there has been a lot of discussion about this in usenet, mostly
concerning telnet which will behave the same.
