When you type "ifconfig" and nothing else, what is the response?  The
first line should NOT say local loopback.  If it does, trying pinging
IP addresses that you know aren't valid for your network.  If you're
still getting responses, your problem is that your network card is
talking to itself, and not to another computer.

I have a similar problem in Slackware 4.0, except, for whatever reason,
eth0 doesn't exist (leaving me in the dark with nothing to try).
