Thanks for all that useful information.

The sequence was: first kernel panic from HD boot, then
                  hung on LI... then
                  kernel panic when booting from 
                  lilo boot floppy
As for me becoming paniky, knowing to have your vast knowledge
behind me, -no way!

Reinstalling linux still gave LI hang and kernel panic from boot floppy
untill I threw the diskette away and got a new one and at the same time
reformatted and scanned the hard drive in DOS.
