If you are sure it is a linux compatable modem, then the first thing i would do
is use the command; cat /proc/pci too see if the card itself has been detected.
If you see it registered then you will see its I/O port address and its IRQ.
You say you have read the modem howto but you make no mention of the commands
you use or even which driver you are trying to use with the modem.
What happens if you use kppp to try and configure the modem.?
I am not a modem expert so i hope others will chip in also.
