No not true, if its detected as "unknown device" it does not mean it is
"unsupported"..

Lawson kindly explaned all that,  i will "try" and help you on the modem.

This is your modem, it is detected as a Lucent (win-modem) as some call it,
It is supported by linux, however i do belive you need to obtain its driver as
it is not included in any distro (as yet).
