2 physical drives, the first drive hda is still alive and kicking

originally Linux was on the second drive alone, with a small FAT
partition for data transfer. The Linux drive was #2, with LILO 'on' the
MBR of the first drive

The Windoze HD is the lone drive and the IDE Master on the 1st line,
LILO is definitely on the drive

the whole of the second drive is failing, the error occurs during the
partition check. Linux boots and i have a boot partition for maintenance
but ....

LILO to dual boot with Windoze

i got a root (/) of about 5 or 50 M, it was since last week. There were
no others available. I generally have 6 partitions in df including FAT
partitions.

the Linux partition check error, it said something about DMA and ide
being reset
the death rattle the HD was making
the drive absence in Windoze, the FAT partition used to be visible from
Windows.

I think it is an hardware problem, I just want Linux to boot quickly
until I can remove the drive. The drive is not in fstab the time
consuming check occurs during partition check, when Linux lists the
partitions available. I also wanted to know if I can replace the drive
without reinstalling Linux.
