Open a file with tar, ?? you extracht a file with tar or create an archive
with tar, you can open a tar archive with 'zless' to see "most" of its
contents.

try;
tar xzf filename.tar.gz
-x extracht
-z run it through gzip
-f filename
-v verbose
Verbose is nice if you want to see your screen scroll fast and makes you
dizzy when untarring large archives.
'man tar' should help you more.

You are not giving the complete command so tar just takes over the console
and does nothing.
