If you can describe the problem in a bit more detail, perhaps I or someone
else on the list can be of help.
1. If some of the modem control (AT) sequences work through minicom, as you
seem to be saying (or am I misreading your posting?), are you able to get
the modem to dial manually (that is, with the ATDT5551013 string, only
replacing the number with a suitable one)? What happens after you dial? (Be
sure to enter the appropriate AT command so you can hear all call progress
tones.)
2. If you have a mouse, what /dev/ttyS* is it on? If ttyS1, this and ttyS3
normally share an interrupt, and that will cause problems. More generally,
what are the EXACT results of the commands
setserial /dev/ttyS3 and
setserial /dev/ttyS1 ?
Do this WITHOUT first using setserial to set any values for the ports.
Related to this, what are the symlinks /dev/mouse and /dev/modem set to?
(ls -l /dev/mo* will return the needed info.)
3. I don't know kppp; I assume it is a front end to start pppd. If so, are
you trying to run it while minicom is also running? What is the EXACT
message that kppp reports, and what have you done to run it up to that point?
4. I don't know the modem you mention, but if (as you seem to be saying)
some of the AT sequences work, I'm assuming it isn't a "Winmodem," that
limited kind of "modem" that requires drivers that are available only for
WinXX OSs. If I've misunderstood your comment about AT sequences, then you
need to check your modem documentation to see if the modem has this
limitation. (If it does, there is no workaround.)
These are only preliminary responses, a sort of ground clearing that will
get us to the point of being able to look at and understand the real problem
you are having. You may want to supply additional information as well, and
you may get some other suggestions that ask about things I haven't thought
of. In general, the more complete the description, the better.
Hope some of this helps. Good luck.
