Others have already offered some sensible suggestions. Here are a few more:
1. You may have an interrupt or IO-port conflict on the card. This isn't too
unlikely, as NE2000 cards often come out of the box set up for INT-3, used
bya serial port. To figure this out, look at the output for ifconfig, and
check /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports to see if the OS sees somethign
else on that INT or those ports.
2. You may have a bad Ethernet cable connecting the Linux host to its hub.
To check this, try a different cable. (Try a different hub port at the same
time, just in case.)
3. Your network is misconfigured. The easiest place to see problems here is
in the output of the route command (read the man page for details).
If you should have occasion to post another question on this topic, I
suggest you include the output of ifconfig and route -n in your message to
the list.
