Is there a good reason not to run quake/quake2 under linux instead of
win98? In my experience, they actually run faster. Might be worth
considering?

Yes. This works.

Connecting from here to a certain server direct I get ping times of about
30 odd. With a very heavily loaded 486 firewall inbetween the ping time
goes up to about 35. If the firewall is not doing anything else the
difference is not at all noticeable.
