There are many different types and makes of modems, you do not say which
sort/make/type, so how can one give a "yes or no" answer.
Linux supports all "normal" modems, not including "winmodems".

As to a new build of the kernel, anyone who has the kernel source code and a
gcc compiler can compile his or her own kernel and include or exclude
whatever kernel options he or she requires. Possably you mean there is a new
kernel version going to be realsesed soon, the answer to that is there will
be a so called 2.2.0 kernel out shortly, however it is not always adviseable
to use the "lastest and greatest" as there is now a stable kernel version
called 2.0.36 which runs on current distributions, be it redhat slackware or
whatever.

Anyway, after the 2.2.0 kernel has been realeased as a "stable version" it
will be a couple of months before it will appier in any new linux
distribution, or at least thats the way it has always been.

You can install Redhat-5.2 which will have all the nessacary tools and
compilers for kernel 2.2.0 as and when it is finaly released, plus the fact
that you can have kernels 2.0.3X on redhat 5.2 anyway.
