Hi everyone,

recently the ftp server on my machine has stopped recieving logins from
anything other than 127.0.0.1, whereas it used to work from anywhere. I
yhave changed something in the hosts.allow and hosts.deny to make this
happen, but i dont know what. I followed the instructions in the various
ISP howtos (ISP-connect, ISP hookup) which said that i should put in
ALL:ALL into hosts.deny and ALL:local into hosts.allow, which i did. When
ftp (and in fact everything except ping) stopped working i realised that i
should put in something allowing people on our network to access me, which
didn't seem to work. i added the line ALL:192.168.0.4 which is my ip
address on the local network and rebooted, but to no avail. When i say ftp
192.168.0.4 it just comes back with a message that it is connected to the
machine but doesn't say anything more, and then the terminal window dies,
unless i kill ftp from another window.

As far as i can tell local has the same permissions as 192.168.0.4, but i
can't ftp from any other computer either. i definitely used to be able to.

Also, the PPP dialup connection has stopped working (but later, its not hte
same problem). I was using the Red Hat netcfg, and would just activate the
ppp0 interface and it would dial. Now when i activate the interface it
waits ages, then dials, then after a bit more it disconnects. this problem
started when i installed the new kernel, but i still have it with the old
one. i definetely have ppp support compiled in, it comes up with the
messages on startup telling me so and i remember choosing ppp support.

I hope you people have some more helpful suggestions, this list has been
very helpful so far.

Thanks,
Ben
