I'm sorry, i wasn't very clear last time when i was explaining my problems.
I put
ALL: local
ALL: 192.168.0.4
ALL: 192.168.0.2

in hosts.allow, where 192.168.0.2 is a nextstation and 192.168.0.4 is me. I
have now found that i can in fact ftp to myself using 192.168.0.4, which i
didn't think worked, but it takes over a minute during which it just says
"connected to 192.168.0.4". It connects immediately on 127.0.0.1.

i think the two files i have attached include all the important things when
from when i try to ftp and use ppp, i dont know what its saying except that
im pretty sure it means the news thing is doing something evil. I can send
more of the log if necessary.

once when i booted up recently (after only making a small change to
hosts.allow) i got a kernel panic, and the same when i rebooted. I had to
reboot off a different kernel and then i could use 2.2.1 again. I really
have no idea what ive done, but it seems that i have hosed the system quite
effectively. Should i be addmitting this and reinstalling, which wouldn't
be too much of a pain as it is a new system, (but which I would find
embarrasing as that is only meant to happen on windows)?

Thanks,
Ben
