First, the ftp problem --
In /etc/hosts.allow, you need to list the IP addresses of the computers that
you want to let access services on the Linux host. Not the address of the
Linux host itself. To guess from the address you specify, you are using
192.168.0 as your LAN network number. So try adding to /etc/hosts.allow this
line:
ALL: 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
Reboot (or restart inetd) and see if that fixes your problem.
If it doesn't, look in the log file on the Linux system (probably
/var/log/messages) and see what tcpd reported about the ftp attempt.
BTW, the man page for this stuff is a bit tricky to find. You need "man 5
hosts_access", not the first thing (or probably even the 10th) most people
would think of.
Now, the PPP problem --
If the "new kernel" is 2.2.whatever, I seem to recall that an updated pppd
is one of the things you need to change. Not sure about that, though, as I
haven't upgraded yet myself. In any case, try making a ppp connection, then
look in /var/log/messages to see what pppd (and maybe chat, or whatever
dialer you use) says was going on. If you can't interpret the log entries
(not a trivial task), post them and maybe I or someone else can help you
decipher them.
