I'm coming to this thread late, so I apologize if I'm reviewing familiar ground.
It sounds like you need to find your printer before continuing to muck
around with /dev entries. So ...
1. Look in /proc/ioports ("more /proc/ioports") for a promising entry. On my
system, the parallel ports are labeled "lp", but you should look for
anything plausible. Ports 378-37F should be associated with /dev/lp0, ports
278-27F with /dev/lp1 .
2. Look in /proc/interrupts (as above) and see what, if anything, is using
IRQ 5 (probably /dev/lp1) or IRQ 7 (probably /dev/lp0).
