:-)Internal modems that are not winmodems nor plug 'n pray need jumpers
to
select what ioport(comm port) and irq the modem occupies. An internal
modem has a UART built in. An external modem has to be plugged in to a
serial port, which controls what ioport and interrupt it uses, so an
external modem has no need or use for jumpers, as it has no choice
about what it is plugged into.

However, if you have an internal modem with jumpers, it is not a
winmodem, and should work with linux. I recommend you save your money.
It is an ISA modem, no? (ISA slots are the biggest slots you'll find
in a pentium, PCI slots are smaller but have more (and smaller)
contacts.).

If your internal modem is set to use a port or irq something else is
using, you will have to change the jumpers. My fingers are too big to
get at them; I keep needle nose pliers for that. Tweezers or a small
but cooperative child will also work.
