To do which of these?

To add the nameservers to resolv.conf, use vi (or the editor you prefer) to
open the file, then add lines that read:

nameserver aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

replacing aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd with the IP address of a nameserver.

To check if host.conf (not hosts; I wrote it wrong in my prior message -
sorry) contains the needed lines, use "more" to display it on the screen.
The file should read in its entirety as follows:

order hosts,bind
multi on

If it doesn't, use an editor to add whatever is needed.

Sorry, that's not exectly what I asked. Can you ping by IP ADDRESS (that is,
the number sequence aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd appropriate for your ISP's server)? Not
by NAME? Failure to ping by name can just be a DNS failure, but even if DNS
isn't working, you should be able to ping by address. If you can't do even
that, then ppp itself isn't working right ... the first stage in fixing your
problem is figuring out which problem you have.

(Actually, you should try more than ping. My ISP won't respond to pings
because they were involved in denial of service attacks a year or so ago.
You should also try to telnet by address and, if possible, connect to a Web
server by address.)

Hope this helps. Good luck.
