Yes. If you cannot ping by address, then your ppp connection probably is not
working at all. So, you need to run the following tests:
1. Start ppp however you normally do. Once it is running, run the command
"ifconfig" and see if it reports a working ppp0 interface.
2. Then run the command "route -n" and see if it reports a default route to
your ISP.
I'm assuming the prior two tests will fail, but they are the definitive ways
to tell if ppp is running. Then ...
3. Go to your logfile (probably /var/log/messages) and look for the messages
posted by the pppd process that you are running (or tried to run). See what
they tell you about why the connection failed. You may also need to look for
messages from "chat" or whatever dialer your system uses.
If you can find all this stuff but can't make sense of it, post again, this
time including in your message the results of these tests (the actual
outout, not a summary of it - if you can't understand the results without
help, you don't know enough to summarize them accurately) and the script you
use to run pppd. Be sure to remove any passwords before you post this material.
