The desktop size ALWAYS defaults to the largest resolution, even if it it
displaying at a smaller resolution. So you're (probably) getting 1024 * 768
with a (say) 640 * 480 "window" onto it. This isn't a virtual display; that
option provides for a larger display than your *largest* resolution.

As to why you aren't getting 1024 * 768, you don't really tell us enough to
know, but I'd wonder if you have set some of the video memory, monitor
horizontal refresh, or monitor vertical refresh too low for 1024 * 768. Take
a look at the diagnostic output from startx (printed by default to the
underlying text console, and you can redirect it to a file with a command
like "startx > errors 2>&1") to see why startx or X says it isn't using the
higher resolution.

No problems at all until I load up x-windows using startx. The trouble is I
get a very low resolution and can only see a small part of the desktop.
Seems strange to me since in xconf I set the display to give preference to
1024x768 in all colour modes. Also I specified that I should not have a
virtual desktop. Does anyone know why this might be?
