The error message says that there is a problem in resolving the hostname
'localhost'.
I don't know if this is the real reason for this error.
But try the following:
Try as user and as root if a DISPLAY enviroment variable is set. ( echo
$DISPLAY )
If you want to connect to the X-Server on your machine this should not be
necessary.
look in your /etc/hosts file. There should be an entry for localhost:

If the entry does not exist, !add! it. Leave other entrys as they are.
Try it and tell us what you found out...
