try and remove the period from localhost. You don't need to reboot after
this. Just 
login as the user and try to start X and run emacs again. ( I have no
period there 
and its existence doesn't make much sense to me. At this position should be
a full
qualified hostname which never ends with a period!) In fact I am pretty
sure that's the
problem.
To make this clear. I never had your problem. I am just trying to find
reasons for the
subscribed behavior and error messages. Are you able to run xterm as the user?
To find out if this really is a name resolving problem you can also try to
run emacs
with 'emacs -d 127.0.0.1:0.0'. Emacs should come up with no error then.
