Possibly, you need only make a partition table with fdisk, and startup
will be much happier. This will disrupt any fs you have made on
/dev/hdb, but if you like you can make /dev/hdb1 to occupy the whole
drive (less the first track that the partition table must be in). The
partition table was in the original PC spec, so the IDE driver is not
expecting to find a hd without one, and may become somewhat confused.
