partition problem

I tried to make two native linux partition on my hd. When I made the
second, the swap partion became allocated. The reason is no more room on
primary partition. I formated the HD by NT. I leave 3G unpartition space
for linux. When I tried to select workstion at the beginning of the
installation, the same problem happened. Not enough space for this
selection. I have to choose custom at this point. What is the reason for
this problem? Thanks in advance.
