If all you need is Word compatability, you may want to take a look at
Corel's WordPerfect 8.  I've used it here to translate Word documents
back and forth and it works quite well.

I've also used Star Office and was not very impressed.  SO *is* a very
full featured package, but that comes at the expense of SO being *very*
resource intensive.  I'm not sure if SO can save Word 97 docs.  Unless
you need more than just Word compatability, I would say SO is overkill.

As for Applixware I've not tried that one yet.
