Actually, you are both right...
Samba is used to provide SMB services out to Windows systems but
it also includes smbclient (and ftp-like smb client program), smbsh (a
wrapper for letting apps browse smb shares off of a /smb path), and the
smbmount program for the latest versions of smbfs in Linux. So Samba really
does both the client side and the server side.

Exchange and Outlook do smtp, smtps, imap, imaps, pop3, and pop3s
(the 's' versions are the SSL enabled varients of the base protocols).
If you need to get at imaps (IMAP-SSL) or pop3s (POP3-SSL) from Linux,
I authored the fetchmail-ssl patches which are available from the
North American Cryptographic Archives <www.cryptography.org> in the SSL
directory.

I use WordPerfect for reading and saving Word documents. I use
Applix Presents for dealing with PowerPoint. Excel can be done with
Wingz, Applix, StarOffice or others. I'm chomping at the bit to get
my hands on the rest of the Corel suite, like Corel Presentation.

After all is said and done, there still remain a few things I
just can NOT get for Linux. Thinks like the Delorme mapping/gps software
or TurboTax. Thanks to vmware, I can now run all of this in a WindowsNT
virtual machine, thus relegating the last few stragglers (and WindowsNT)
to the status of buggy utilities... :-)
