When any piece of hardware is installed the operating system has to be told
its there in one way or another.
You make no mention of how you tryed to configure your nic, so all i can do
is suggest howto make linux see it in _my_ terms.

I take it your distro has a long list of files in /lib/modules/2.x.x/*
Considering you make no mention of the type or even make of card i will use
"smc=ultra" as my example.

edit /etc/conf.modules and add;

alias eth0 smc-ultra

The above tells the kernel to load the smc-ultra ethernet driver when
ifconfig trys to configure the interface "eth0".

Now type;

ifconfig eth0 10.xx.xx.xx up

'ifconfig'

should then show something like the following;

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:00:C0:9F:88:AF
          inet addr:44.137.28.48  Bcast:44.255.255.255  Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:51985 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:52570 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x310 Memory:d0000-d4000

Of course the details will be different, the above is from my own system.

Now you add routes to that interface like;

route add 10.10.10.1 eth0
route add default gw 10.10.10.1 eth0

The first adds a route to 10.10.10.1 on eth0, the second tells route to send
all traffic to 10.10.10.1 for forwarding.

PLEASE take note, when asking a question, _TELL_ us the details, it makes
life a whole lot easier when _trying_ to explain HOWTO do someting.

Read the following files which sould be on your system.

/usr/doc/*
         Ethernet-HOWTO
         NET-3-HOWTO
         Networking-Overview-HOWTO
                                  /mini
                                       Kerneld
'man modprobe'
'man ifconfig'

I will not comment on your printer problem, but its possably "module"
related as well.

Why did you _not_ tell the installation process about your hardware, it
possably whould have installed and configured the devices for you.

A good place to seek for information on what is happening on your system is
in /var/log/messages debug syslog etc.

O yes, its curtious to place a subject line in mail, please do so.
