I don't know what you did wrong. You haven't burned out your modem, you
just haven't connected to your ISP. What you get for route is the same
as what you would have gotten if you had tried it before trying to
connect to your ISP. It is just standard for a linux system to be able
to talk to itself on 127.0.0.0. It's how you can do telnet localhost to
telnet to your own system. Probably, your chat script (or whatever you
use for a dialer) is wrong. I'd advise you to go with Ray Olszewski's
advice. He knows a lot more about this stuff than I do. :-)
My only connection to the internet is with a windows mail program that I
run with wine. But it works, and I don't pay anything for it.
