This sounds like the win95 box isn't finding your dns server, make sure
under DUN that is has the primary DNS as 172.16.1.1, and if your network
(isp, school, work) runs their own DNS (more than likely) put the ip
address of their DNS for the secondary under DUN.
Right click on your connection in win95, go down to properties. In here
they will either be a tab or button that says Server Settings. Click on
tcp/ip settings button, Specif Name Server Address and put those DNS in
there.
Can you say dialup from the win95 and resolve all other DNS entries (like
does www.slashdot.org work in IE/Netscape or does it kick back and error?)
accept for your linux box?
> Jul 24 17:46:34 narada named[635]: sysquery: findns error
>(NXDOMAIN) on narada.col7.metta.lk.1.16.172.in-addr.arpa?
This _could_ be a typo in one of your named database (DB) files.
Typically it appears that you forgot an ending . (period) in your
db.172.16.1 (maybe name differant) or your db.narada (this could also
have a differant name).
For example if you have an entry like so
172.161.N.in-add.arpa IN PTR narda.col7.metta.lk
It would NOT work right. It would have to have the leading zero at the end
of em, like so
172.161.N.in-add.arpa. IN PTR narda.col7.metta.lk.
Check your files quick to vefiy that this isn't causeing it. This syntax
is for the old version of bind (4.something), I'm not too famlair with the
newest version's syntax, this may not even be nessacery.
The other thing that you could check is to get on a computer that isn't
dirrectly connected to your DNS server and see if your host(s) reslove
properly. In nslookup you can change the server you "look" at for DNS
resloving. type nslookup, this will put your in interactive mode. type:
server a.root-servers.net then start from there. a.root-servers.net is
one of the 13 root servers run by internic. "Backtrack" from them to see
where the problem could lie if their is one in this accept.
Look/test those and your should find something that doesn't look/work
right, if not there is a few other things we could try.
