Okay, this is just a guess.  But it sounds to me that your monitor/video
timings etc aren't set properly.  And possibly Netscape isn't set up quite
right, maybe java can't find the class path or something like that.

Have you run X while redirecting all output to a file to see if there are
any error messages coming up that you are missing.  You can do that
with...
startx > itdidthis 2>&1

That redirects stdout and stderr to a file called "itdidthis" in the
current directory.

For the monitor/video setup for X have a read through...

man xvidtune
man XF86Setup
man 5 XF86Config

If none of that helps, come back here with some specific questions, and
someone here should be able to help.
