Yes i do use a cable modem and it works like a charm.

You make no mention of a distro or kernel version, so i will put it
this way.

My kernel is 2.2.5
and i use dhcp-2.0 for the modem.

After installing the dhcp software all you need to do is issue;
dhclient eth0 presuming eth0 is the device.

I also presume you will be assiged a dynamic ip address.
