I use a cable modem.

If you haven't installed Linux yet the install package will prompt
you for the info required: host name, dns servers, etc.
(or to be more accurate, the install package *should* walk you thru
all that, depending on which distribution you go with. I know
caldera 2.2 and REd Hat 6.0 do.)

AFAIK the main problem people run into is not with the modem itself
since that works independant of the PC, but if the ethernet card is
Plug 'N Play. If the Ethernet card is PNP sometime Linux has
problems recognizing it. But that is not a major hastle -- and the
gurus on this list can walk you through working around that, I am
sure.
