1 - use pine for reading and writing only, no fetching. And point
pine's INBOX to the default setting.
2 - use fetchmail to retrieve your mail
3 - use procmail to filter and sort it
Grab fetchmail from freshmeat, or if you already have it, man
fetchmail.
man procmail
man procmailex
