Well i dont have any experiance with that type of sound card however i
think having to take it out of the box is going a little to far at this
stage.
Quite possably what you need is PnP tools, i suggest you read some of the
documentation in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound, i did 
grep 432 *
in that directory and it returns a lot of text, i dont mean to be rude by
saying read the docs but i think in this situation it would be best.

Possably one of the others will have more direct advice, however at a quick
glance i think you will be able to see what to do by read the small files
in that directory.

If you know on which ira all your hardware resides you are more than half
way to getting it all working.
As to the modem, i seem to recall a lot of mails about that here, so i
suggest you take a look at the archives.

Once again other may contribute to the modem problem, i do not have much
experiance in modems and ppp, i have a cable modem using DHCP.
