Linux on a Mac

Ok, this may be a silly question, but like it says...I'm a newbie...

Anyway, my *roommate*  :)  wanted to know if you can run Linux on a 
Macintosh through an emulation software (Virtual PC or something)?  It 
doesn't need to run particularly smoothly or quickly, it just needs to run.  
Any resources that may be useful in this endevor?
