It is hard to be very specific with advice while knowing so little about
what you want to do. At this point, I don't even know what country you are
in, and my knowledge is pretty USA-centric.
I assume you will be getting fairly standard dial-up ppp service from some
ISP. Are you setting up just one computer or a LAN that will use a PC
running Linux as a router? Do you pay by the minute for phone service or is
it a fixed monthly fee? What connection speeds does the ISP support? These
are the kinds of things that go into making a good decision about how to
proceed.
General advice: get makes, models, and prices for some 56K modems that are
easily available to you. Check them in the modem database that I and others
have already given you the URL for. Pick the cheapest one that is a real modem.
If you really expect to have DSL or cable that soon, I'd especially want to
choose something cheap. (I don't want to sound patronizing, but you DO
understand, don't you, that once you get DSL or cable, you won't use the
modem with that service?) In your situation, I might even try to get by with
a slow model (28.8. or 33.3 kbps) for the short time until you get the fast
service -- these can be found at surplus stores for a few dollars, and they
are always real modems.
General guidelines: almost all external modems are real modems (maybe all,
but I think I've heard of 1 or 2 odd cases). Almost all pci modems are HSP
("Winmodems"). ISA modems can be either kind ... usually (here in
California) the ones under $50 are HSP, the ones over $70 real. But these
are only rules of thumb; to be sure, check the database.
If you are going to use an external modem, make sure your serial port uses a
16550A or better UART (only an issue on old equipment; I mention it because
Lawson and I both use some antiques, so we need to keep it in mind).
