Hitting enter should start the "default" image, default is defined in
/etc/lilo.conf with
default=
or if that is not to be found the first entry is then the default image.
As to add configure or whatever that could be a home brew script run from
lilo, check als the lilo.conf file.

No not useless xf86config is the only program which has success when other
programs fail.
Now two things, running xf8config will not change any mouse settings other
than in /etc/X11/XF86Config. Considering you have been so kind as to tell
us what mouse type you have and the other details about the mouse it makes
it so hard to say what to do.
What i will say is, if it is a normal mousetype MicroSoft compatable,
MouseSystems mouse or PS/2 then there should be no problem at all.
Now you have not even told us if the mouse even orks in console mode.???
