        You might want to uninstall the RH 5.2 compilers, as RH 6.1
        includes more current (not current, but closer) compilers...

        I believe the packages you want are egcs-somethingoranother.rpm
        and egcs-c++-something.rpm ( sorry don't know exact names, I've
        never used RedHat).

        gcc names are really weird... there was a fork a little
        while ago, the compilers were called egcs. Then gcc handed
        developement to egcs, then they made gcc no longer mean
        'Gnu C compiler' and renamed it to 'GNU Compiler Collection'
        so that now, gcc is called gcc again, but no distribution that I
        know of, except Debian ships with them.

        they went from gcc 2.7.2.3 -> egcs-1.x.x -> gcc 2.95.x

        most distributions are now shipping stuff from egcs,
        which leads to confusion when looking for gcc packages :-) .

        see:
        http://gcc.gnu.org/fom_serv/cache/8.html
        for a somewhat allright explanation.

you need an ncurses developement library...
you can grab one at:
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/redhat-6.1/i386/RedHat/RPMS/ncurses-devel-4.2-25.i386.rpm

but it should be on your RH 6.1 CD.
