Ok, if i remember correctly there is one line simalar to;

NETWORKING=false

as a default entry, if one turns false into true it could make all the
difference.
Further, what does 'dmesg' say about eth0 just after booting.??
Is there any error messages in /var/log/messages / syslog / *.?

One thought, if your ethernet driver is defined as a module is it defined
in /etc/modules.conf so that kmod/kerneld knows what driver to load.???
