O.K,
try this,
run ""smbclient -L HOSTNAME -Uusername%password" on your linux server,
where, HOSTNAME = a PC on the school LAN with somthing shared.
        username%password is your login on details for the school LAN

You should get a list of shares on that host, the browse list, (available
hosts)
and at the end the workgroup and the name of the master browser.

find out the ip address of the master browser.

on your PC ping the master browser.
rename your lmhosts file, and make a new one that contains

#host              ipaddr         option
masterbrowsername xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx #PRE

run nbtstat -R   (reloads cache)
run "net view \\ masterbrowsername."
you should get a list of the shares, there is no reason why not :)
