Well ... is the HP LJ 4 Plus different in any important way from the HP LJ
4M Plus? I have the latter printer here, and it has worked flawlessly with
Linux for some years now. The HP JetDirect manual has a detailed section on
needed printcap entries. So -- Miko, post your printcap entry if you'd like
help with it. Here is the two I use (for a connection via the printer's
JetDirect card - a parport connection would be somewhat different) --
separate entries for text (ascii) and postscript (raw) output:

#---------customization here------------------
# entries for a networked HP Laserjet 4 with hostname caxton
# ascii is for text printing
# raw is for Postscript & PCL files (& HPGL)
# info taken from appendix B of HPLJ4 JetDirect NI Configuration Guide
# added here by RO 980307

ascii|caxton_ascii:\
        :lp=:\
        :rm=caxton:\
        :rp=text:\
        :lf=/var/spool/lpd/ERRORLOG:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/caxton_ascii:

raw|caxton_raw:\
        :lp=:\
        :rm=caxton:\
        :rp=raw:\
        :lf=/var/spool/lpd/ERRORLOG:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/caxton_raw:
#-----------end customization--------------

Hope this helps. Good luck.
