I belive the Redhat way was and still is, edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop
I dont have X installed on my accessable redhat system here, however i
belive the entry would be;

KDE

I also belive if the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop is zero bytes you will be
promted to give your preferance.
{according to /etc/X11/prefdm}

Yes i am talking global settings, but considering most folks start with
global settings i found it relavant.
