I installed KDE choosing a complete install in the setup - it was a fresh 
install.

I installed from a text interface, and I don't start in X, only in console 
mode (level 3, I believe)

Well, I will see about that. I will also follow Richard Adams' advice and 
see what happens.

Thanks to Jill, Richard, Warren and Charles. I will let you know what happens.
BTW: icewm and fvwm2 will give almost the same messages (cannot connect to 
server... etc)
