You are correct of course, but old habits are hard to break, and .xinitrc
works for me on RH 6.0, and 6.2.  Up until recently I used Blackbox with
a few dock apps loaded through .xinitrc, and it's easy to just comment
things out as needed.  

My /etc/sysconfig/desktop reads:
'PREFERENCE = startkde'
