I eventually got back in, but odd things were happening (like, worked one time, not the next) so I decided to treat my new hard drive with suspicion and I've just done a full reinstall on the old one. The ppp and Kmail seems to be behaving the same way as it did previously but I'll know more - tomorrow! (When I have a chance to check it out).
