OK, having defeated a dodgy hard disk and a loose modem connection, I'm back on
the track of the disappearing Kppp ;-)

If you recall, I said that when I (as User) clicked on Kppp it put up a 'root
password' box which, when filled in, just disappeared leaving an error message
about Magic Cookies. (As Root, OTOH, it works fine).

Since then I found that RH PPP (rp3) works for both User and Root, but has a
problem sending long messages - they hang. Short messages go OK and it
downloads fine. Kppp OTOH works sending and receiving, so is preferable
IMO, when I can make it load :)

Your recommendation was:

1. as user:
mcookie |xargs xauth add :0 .
xauth list

2. as root:
xauth -q -f /home/<user>/.Xauthority extract - :0|xauth merge -
xauth list

I take it the idea is to synchronise the magic cookies - I've found that when
the cookies for argo/unix:0 are the same for <user> and root, Kppp loads
OK. The cookies for argo:0 seem to be irrelevant.

The problem is, Xwindows seems to change the magic cookie each time it
starts.

So if I do step 1 in a X terminal window (rxvt), then do step 2 as su (i.e.
root?), Kppp will then work.

Is there a way to automate this? I presume using a script (not that I've ever
written one), or should I see if I can stop Xwindows changing the cookie on
starting?
